We Are The Church: Generosity (Pt. 2)

Overview

In this Table Talks guide, we'll continue our exploration of generosity by diving into the practical aspects of serving and giving of our resources, time, and talents. We'll also discuss the importance of recognizing that generosity is not about us but about conveying a powerful message through our actions. Additionally, we'll draw inspiration and context from a few stories—and explore the themes of obedience, resistance, and hesitancy.

Read

Proverbs 11:25 NIV

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Matthew 25:35-40 NIV

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Discuss

  1. In your own words, define what serving means to you. How does serving align with the concept of generosity?

  2. Read Matthew 25:35-40 NIV

  3. Share examples from your life when you've given resources or dedicated your time to help others. How did these experiences contribute to cultivating a generous spirit?

  4. Discuss the idea that generosity is not about our feelings but about the message behind the action. How does this perspective impact the effectiveness of our acts of generosity?

  5. Reflect on the notion of giving others more than just material resources—giving them Jesus. How can our actions reflect the love and message of Jesus?

  6. Provide a quick recap of the stories of Moses and Mustafa. What lessons can we draw from their experiences in terms of obedience, resistance, and hesitancy?

  7. Which category do you identify with: someone who knows they've been avoiding action, or someone unsure of what God is asking? Share your thoughts.

  8. For those who recognize avoidance, what might be the reasons behind the resistance or hesitation? What obstacles stand between them and obedience to God's call?

  9. For individuals unsure of what God is asking, how can obedience be a practical step? Discuss the idea that sometimes answers come through obedience, one step at a time.

Call to Action

As we conclude this discussion, consider the following actions:

  1. Reflect on the discussion and consider areas in your life where you can respond with greater obedience to God's call, overcoming resistance or hesitancy.

  2. Identify specific steps you can take in the coming days to serve, give, and respond to God's call with greater obedience.

  3. Share your journey of cultivating a generous heart, including challenges faced and victories achieved, fostering a supportive and accountable community.

Remember, the call to generosity is an ongoing journey—one step at a time. Let's commit to taking those steps together, making a lasting impact on our lives and the lives of those around us.
